Summary
Imam Ahmad's companions differed over whether his phrase "la yanbaghi" (it is not fitting) should be carried to prohibition or to disapproval 1. Ibn al-Qayyim noted that many later scholars removed prohibition from what the imams had called disapproved, then carried "disapproval" to mere indecorousness or to disapproval of leaving the better 2.

- The book transmits from al-Ri'ayatayn, al-Hawi al-Kabir and Adab al-Mustafti that the better course is to look to the contextual clues in each expression: if they indicate obligation, recommendation, prohibition, disapproval or permissibility, the saying is carried to it; al-Mardawi approved this view 2.
