In the fourth chapter of the introduction to Kashf al-zunun, Haji Khalifa gathers the divisions of the sciences made by the authors of subjects, and sets out two of them. ²

This is by the scholar al-Hafid. He divides the codified sciences into those codified by the jurists of the Law, to explain the words of the Qur'an and the Sunna and to establish the doctrinal and practical rulings, and the role of the literary arts; and those codified by the philosophers, to investigate things. Among the sciences of the jurists he counts the science of recitation, hadith and its principles, exegesis, theology, jurisprudence and its principles, and literature. For the Sufi elite there is the science of Sufism. He disputed the inclusion of debate and disputation, since the counting of disagreement belongs to the Law-based sciences, because the jurists codified it and the sages did not. ²

This is in the Khaqani Fawa'id. He divides the sciences into theoretical, which is not connected with how something is done, and practical, which is connected with it; and into instrumental, which is intended for something else, and non-instrumental, which is intended for its own sake. He held that the meaning of the instrumental returns to the meaning of the practical. ³
