Granada

The treaty of Granada broken clause by clause: in 904 the Muslims were forced to convert — first those once Christian were ordered back 'to unbelief by compulsion', then any Muslim was told his grandfather had been Christian; the Albaicin rose and killed the governors, making death-or-conversion the decree. Whole villages refused — Balfig, Andarax and the mountain of Ballanca whose men killed 'the lord of Cordoba' and were let out on aman to Fez — while the outwardly converted prayed in secret and were burned for it 1.

Overview

al-Maqqari, in "Nafh al-Tib", reports that the Christians broke the terms of the surrender of Granada one after another, until the Muslims were compelled to convert to Christianity in 904 AH. 2

How it happened

According to al-Maqqari, the priests wrote that everyone who had converted from Christianity must be forced back to Christianity. A Muslim was then told that his grandfather had been a Christian, so he must return. The people of al-Bayyazin rose against the rulers and killed them. A ruling was issued that whoever rose against the ruler would be punished by death, unless he became Christian. 2

Villages including Balfiq and Andarash refused, so the enemy gathered forces against them, killed them and took them captive. al-Maqqari mentions that the people of Jabal Balfaqa killed a great number of the enemy, and that they were taken out under safe-conduct to Fez. 2

He adds that those who professed Christianity while secretly worshipping God and praying were watched closely by the Christians, who burned many of them and prevented them even from carrying a small knife. 2

The Alhambra

The Alhambra of Granada: Ibn al-Ahmar built the fortress as his residence when he took the city in 635, and it became the Nasrids' seat — the elegant palaces raised by Yusuf 'al-Ghani billah' — until the last sultan surrendered it to the Christians on 2 Rabi I 897 after five hundred hostages secured the entry.
