Overview

The sources report that the Mamluks felt responsible for protecting the holy places from Portuguese expansion, despite the weakness of their state. Sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri sent a naval expedition of thirteen ships carrying fifteen hundred men, under the command of Husayn al-Kurdi. 1

The two battles

The expedition reached the island of Diu and then Chaul, and met the Portuguese fleet under Lourenço de Almeida in 914 AH / 1508 CE, and the victory went to the Muslims. The Portuguese then reinforced their forces and returned, and the Muslim fleet was defeated in 915 AH / 1509 CE in the battle of Diu. 1

Ottoman reinforcement

Sultan Bayezid II sent help to al-Ghawri in Shawwal 916 AH / 1511 CE: catapults, arrows and forty qintars of gunpowder. But they did not arrive safely, because they were exposed to piracy by the Knights of Saint John. 1
