إعادة الحجر الأسود إلى موضعه

c. 950 CE · 339 AH

In 339 the Black Stone was restored to its place after more than twenty years with the Qarmatians — a silver band of three thousand seven hundred and ninety and a half dirhams' weight fastened it. Muhammad ibn Nafi' al-Khuza'i, who examined it while it lay uprooted, said the blackness was only at its head, the rest white, its length a forearm's bone 1.

Overview

The Black Stone was returned to its place in 339 AH, after more than twenty years with the Qarmatians. 2

al-Suyuti's account

A silver collar was made to bind the stone; its weight was 3790 dirhams and a half. al-Suyuti quotes Muhammad ibn Nafi al-Khuza'i that he looked at the stone when it had been pulled out, and the blackness was only at its top, and the rest was white, and its length was the size of a forearm bone. 2

Ibn al-Athir's account

Ibn al-Athir reports that the Qarmatians returned it to Mecca in 339 AH, and said: "We took it by an order, and we return it by an order." Bajkam had offered them fifty thousand dinars for its return, and they did not answer him, but then returned it for nothing in Dhu al-Qa'da. They carried it to Kufa and hung it in its great mosque until people saw it, then carried it to Mecca. It had stayed with them for twenty-two years. 3

Ibn al-Jawzi's account

Ibn al-Jawzi reports that the stone had been hung on the seventh pillar of the mosque of Kufa, and that the brothers of Abu Tahir wrote in Dhu al-Qa'da that they had returned it by the order of those who had taken it, so that the people might complete their rites and pilgrimage. 4
