Algiers

After failing at Bougie and being trapped at Jijel between the Hafsids and Salim al-Tumi, Aruj entered Algiers with Ottoman support, killed its ruler on proof of his dealings with Spain, and took Cherchell — in the same 1516 that saw Marj Dabiq 1.

Summary

Aruj Barbarossa's entry into Algiers in 922/1516, in the very year the Mamluks fell before the Ottomans at Marj Dabiq 1.

Before the entry

The brothers Aruj and Khayr al-Din had failed at Bougie and were trapped at Jijel between the Hafsids and Salim al-Tumi, the Spanish-backed ruler of Algiers. Al-Salabi holds the more probable view that contact with the Ottomans predated Aruj's death and the conquest of Syria and Egypt — and that it was the arriving Ottoman support which let the brothers reach Algiers before the Spanish could, for the site's excellence 1.

The entry

Aruj entered Algiers, killed its ruler on proof of his appeals for Spanish troops, took the port of Cherchell, and the city was his 1.
