عروج بربروسة

Uruj ibn Ya'qub ibn Yusuf al-Turki, known as Uruj Barbarossa, one of the sons of the Turkish conquerors settled on the island of Mudelli. His mother was an Andalusian Muslim ².

al-Salabi reports that his name is taken from the event of the Night Journey and Ascension, and he inclines to the view that he was born on that night. The Turks pronounced it "Ouruj", then it was Arabised as "Uruj" ².

He went with his brother Khayr al-Din to naval jihad from a young age, in the Archipelago sea, around the year 1510 CE ².

Then they moved their activity to North Africa, and established a base at the port of Jijel in the year 1514 CE to liberate Bejaia and help the Muslims of al-Andalus. They ruled Algeria and some neighbouring regions ².

A marble slab remained on the gate of the fortress of Cherchell, bearing his name and the date 924 AH (1518 CE), and another marble slab on the gate of the Mosque of al-Shawwas in the capital, Algiers. He was killed in one of the battles in the year 1518 CE, and his brother Khayr al-Din succeeded him ².
