قتل الشلمغاني وابن أبي عون
قتل الشلمغاني وابن أبي عون
c. 934 CE · 322 AH
In 322 Ibn Muqla seized al-Shalmaghani and found in his house notes from believers addressing him as no men address each other, including one in the vizier Ibn Wahb's hand; though he recanted, the jurists finally shed his blood and he and Ibn Abi Awn were crucified and burned. His doctrine: God indwells all things to their capacity, and the lahut appeared in five nasut figures paired with five devils — Adam/Iblis, Noah/Iblis, Salih and the she-camel's hamstringer, Abraham/Nimrod, Moses/Pharaoh 1.

Overview
In Shawwal 322 AH the vizier Ibn Muqla arrested al-Shalmaghani, and in Dhu al-Qa'da he and Ibn Abi Awn were crucified and burned, as Ibn al-Athir relates. 1
The proceedings
The source says that the house was searched and papers and letters were found from his followers, addressing him in terms no human uses toward another. Al-Shalmaghani denied his doctrine and professed Islam. He and his companions were brought several times before the jurists and judges, and at the end the jurists ruled that his blood was lawful to shed. 1
What is attributed to his doctrine
Ibn al-Athir attributes to him the view that God indwells everything to the degree each thing can bear, and that the divine appears in five human forms, corresponding to five devils. This is the source's description of his doctrine, and according to the same report al-Shalmaghani denied it. 1
