Overview

Majorca was taken on Monday the fourteenth of Safar 627 AH, according to Ibn al-Abbar. Al-Makhzumi, in his history of Majorca, gives the reasons for it and the course of the fighting. 2

The cause

Its ruler Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Musa took power in 606 AH. He sent a ship to bring timber, and the governor of Tortosa seized it. He then thought of raiding the lands of the Romans, which Al-Makhzumi calls an ill-omened opinion. 3

His son took Mastah from Barcelona. The Romans then took an oath from their king and gathered twenty thousand from the land and sixteen thousand at sea in 626 AH. 3

The fighting

The governor struck the necks of four of the city's notables, and the subjects united to seek vengeance. The battle took place on Monday the eighteenth of Shawwal, and the Muslims were routed. The Christians came down by the Gate of Kuhl. 3

On Sunday the city was taken, and twenty-four thousand of its people were killed. The governor was seized and tortured, and lived for forty-five days after that. 3
