Overview

Ibn al-Imad in "Shadharat al-Dhahab" relates that the sun was eclipsed in a great eclipse on the eighteenth of Shawwal 836 AH. 1

The report

The eclipse extended from after the afternoon prayer to near sunset. The people performed the eclipse prayer and thought the sun had set eclipsed, until it cleared shortly before that. 1

The Gregorian date is derived and needs to be checked against a modern source.
