Summary

The Prophet pitched his camp at Thaniyyat al-Wada'; Ibn Hisham says he appointed Muhammad ibn Maslama al-Ansari over Medina, and relates from al-Darawardi from his father that he appointed Siba' ibn Urfuta. 1

The account

When the Prophet went out he pitched his camp at Thaniyyat al-Wada', a ridge overlooking Medina, per the editors. 1

Ibn Hisham said: he appointed Muhammad ibn Maslama al-Ansari over Medina. 1

And Ibn Hisham relates from Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Darawardi from his father that on his departure for Tabuk the Prophet appointed Siba' ibn Urfuta over Medina. 1

Markers of weakness and doubt

  • Disagreement over who was left in charge of Medina: Muhammad ibn Maslama (Ibn Hisham's own statement) or Siba' ibn Urfuta (al-Darawardi's account from his father); Ibn Hisham does not adjudicate (p. 162).
  • The spelling "al-Darawardi" in the editors' version vs. the account's "al-Andarawardi" — the editors' form is the well-known one (note p. 162).

Abu Dharr lags behind and follows on foot

Man after man fell behind the Prophet on the march, and he would say: leave him; if there is good in him, God will bring him up to you. Then Abu Dharr was reported to have fallen behind, his camel slowing him, so he took his baggage on his back and set out on foot following the Prophet's tracks. When a watcher saw him the Prophet said: let it be Abu Dharr; and it was he. The Prophet prayed for him and said that he walks alone, dies alone and is raised alone.
