Summary

A tribe of Kinana that entered Quraysh's pact and covenant on the day of the al-Hudaybiyya peace 1. Its clan Banu al-Dil seized upon the truce and ambushed Khuza'a by night at the water of al-Watir — with Quraysh's backing — the breach on which the conquest of Mecca followed 1.

The old enmity

Between Banu Bakr and Khuza'a lay a Jahili feud: before Islam Khuza'a killed Banu al-Aswad ibn Razn — Salama, Kulthum and Dhu'ayb — chiefs of Banu al-Dil, at Arafa by the Sanctuary's boundary stones 2. Khuza'a also killed the merchant Malik ibn Abbad al-Hadrami and took his wealth; his alliance was with Banu al-Aswad 2.

Its role in the al-Hudaybiyya breach

During the truce Nawfal ibn Mu'awiya al-Dili went out among Banu al-Dil — not all of Banu Bakr followed him — and ambushed Khuza'a by night at al-Watir 1. When his companions appealed to him at the Sanctuary's bounds he refused to turn back, saying: "take your revenge" 1.

For young visitors

A tribe that had an old feud with its neighbours. When a peace pact came, some of its men seized the chance and attacked their neighbours at night at a well — and that was the start of the whole pact's collapse.

The Bakr–Khuza'a clash at al-Watir

A night raid by Banu al-Dil of Banu Bakr — secretly armed and joined by men of Quraysh — on Khuza'a at their watering place al-Watir in lower Mecca. The breach of the Hudaybiyya truce it caused is the spark the tradition gives for the conquest of Mecca.
