Thamud

Thamud are a people whom al-Mas'udi says descended from Thamud ibn Abir ibn Iram ibn Sam ibn Nuh. He counts them among the perished peoples who spoke Arabic, and says that the account of their prophet Salih is well known. ²

Thamud with their children and those who followed them travelled and settled al-Hijr, towards Wadi al-Qura between Syria and the Hijaz. ²

According to al-Baladhuri, Thamud settled al-Hijr between the Hijaz and Syria, and there they were destroyed. ³

Al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet ﷺ passed by al-Hijr, the dwellings of Thamud, on the expedition of Tabuk. He told the people not to enter the dwellings of those who wronged themselves except weeping, lest what befell them befall you. He covered his head with his cloak while he was on his mount. ^{4 5}
