Overview

A red ruby gem from the caliphal treasury, known as al-Jabali. Al-Musta'in brought it out in 248 AH. 2

Its story

Al-Mas'udi says that al-Rashid bought it for forty thousand dinars and had his name, Ahmad, engraved on it. He mentions that it passed through the hands of the Kisra kings, and that no king engraved it without dying a violent death, so the next would scrape the engraving away. 2

He describes it as shining at night like the light of a lamp, with figures appearing in it. It came to light in the days of al-Muqtadir, and then its trace disappeared. 2
