المصحف العثماني بقرطبة

The Uthmanic codex of Cordoba, held to be one of the four Uthman sent to the garrison cities; Abd al-Mu'min b. Ali carried it out of Cordoba on 11 Shawwal 552, the Almohads bore it on campaign for blessing until the amir Sa'id's defeat near Tlemcen in 645 scattered it to the Zayyanid treasury, whence Abu l-Hasan al-Marini took it in Ramadan 737, lost it at Tarifa in 741 into Portugal, and redeemed it through an Azemmour merchant to Fes by 745; Ibn Abd al-Malik doubted the blood-of-Uthman claim, and al-Tujibi had seen the Damascene copy in the Umayyad mosque's maqsura in 657 and the Meccan under Qubbat al-Turab 1.

Overview

The Uthmanic copy that was in Cordoba, one of the four copies that Uthman sent to the regions. 2

Its journey

It was taken out of Cordoba on the night of Saturday, 11 Shawwal 552 AH, in the days of Abd al-Mu'min ibn Ali and by his order. The Muwahhidun (Almohads) continued to carry it on their journeys, seeking its blessing. 2

Al-Mu'tadid al-Sa'id ibn al-Ma'mun carried it when he set out for Tlemcen at the end of 645 AH. He was killed near it, and the copy was looted. It is said that it passed to the treasury of the kings of Tlemcen. 2

Abu al-Hasan al-Marini took Tlemcen at the end of Ramadan 737 AH and gained the copy. It was then lost at the battle of Tarif in 741 AH and ended up in the land of Portugal. Efforts were made to recover it, and it reached Fez in 745 AH through a merchant from Azemmour. 2

Views on its attribution

Ibn Marzuq relates that the sultan Abu al-Hasan would not travel without it. Ibn Abd al-Malik mentions that what was said about it containing the blood of Uthman is far-fetched, though if one of the copies does, it is perhaps the Syrian one. 2

Al-Tujibi al-Shami examined one in the maqsura of the Umayyad Mosque in 657 AH, and the Meccan one at the Qubbat al-Turab. The note on the back of the Madani copy states that the compilation was made with a group of the Companions, among them Zayd ibn Thabit (may God be pleased with him), Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr and Sa'id ibn al-As. 2
