Overview

Abaqa ibn Hulagu, the second Ilkhan of the Hulaguid house in Iraq, son of Hulagu and ruler of the Ilkhanate. He succeeded his father in 663 AH. In 680 AH he marched toward al-Sham in coordination with Mengü-Temür, ruler of the Dasht in the north, and camped near Hama with his brother Mengü-Temür. Al-Mansur Qalawun met them near Homs and gained the upper hand; many of them were killed and others were taken prisoner, and Abaqa returned defeated to his lands. 1

The year of his death is not documented in the museum's data. It is likely around 680 AH, and an additional source is needed.

Hulagu's letters to al-Nasir of Damascus: 'We killed their soldiers with God's sword; the city's lord came into our service, lied under questioning, and earned death. Answer the king of the earth — the hour you stand on our letter, Syria's fortresses turn heaven to earth and length to breadth'. And: 'we have wasted lands and slain women and children; you who remain will follow those gone — we are armies of ruin, not of dominion; lions cower at our awe; amirs and caliphs are in my fist; we are coming to you — yours to flee, ours to pursue'.
