Overview

Abu Nu'aym Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad ibn Adi al-Istarabadhi, a Sunni jurist and a companion of al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman. 1

The hadith of "the scholar of Quraysh"

He transmitted the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: "Do not revile Quraysh, for its scholar will fill the earth with knowledge." 1 He said that the hadith refers to a man of learning from Quraysh in this community, namely al-Shafi'i. This is his own opinion, not a ruling of the editor or of the book. 1

His death

His death is disputed. The editor, citing al-Subki, reports that he died in 322 AH or in a later year, and al-Shirazi gives no date. 1

محمد بن إدريس الشافعي

Imam of the Shafi'i madhhab, died in al-Ma'mun's days; per al-Suyuti, al-Mutawakkil said 'my grief over Muhammad ibn Idris — I wished I lived in his days to learn from him, for I dreamt the Prophet saying he left you a good science: follow it and be guided' — whence al-Suyuti concludes al-Mutawakkil was the first caliph to adopt a madhhab.
