عبد النبي صاحب زبيد

Abd al-Nabi, master of Zabid, who had cut the Abbasid khutba — confident the heat would kill the invaders 'save a lizard's bite', he rode out against Turanshah in Rajab 569, lost, and was taken with his pious wife al-Hurra; handed to Sayf al-Dawla Mubarak ibn Kamil of Shayzar's Banu Munqidh to yield up his treasures, including his father's grave-hoard 1.

Overview

Abd al-Nabi, who seized power in Zabid, and had cut off the Abbasid khutba there. 2

The campaign of Turanshah

Shams al-Dawla Turanshah ibn Ayyub set out against him with the permission of Nur al-Din in Rajab 569 AH. 2 The people of Zabid who were with Turanshah broke away from him, so he went out to them with his army and their force was defeated; the attackers set ladders against the wall and took the city by force. 2

Capture

He and his wife, known as al-Hurra, were taken prisoner. Ibn al-Athir describes her as a righteous woman who gave much charity to the poor among the pilgrims. Turanshah handed him over to Sayf al-Dawla Mubarak ibn Kamil al-Munqidhi to extract money from him, and he showed them where his father's treasures were buried. 2

Turanshah's conquest of Zabid (569 AH)

Rajab 569 (early 1174): with Nur al-Din's leave — for Abd al-Nabi of Zabid had cut the Abbasid khutba — Shams al-Dawla Turanshah marched from Egypt via Mecca, routed Abd al-Nabi outside Zabid, scaled its wall and sacked the town, taking him and his wife al-Hurra prisoner; Zabid submitted and the Abbasid khutba was proclaimed — the first move of the Ayyubid conquest of Yemen, urged on by the Yemeni poet Umara at Cairo.
