Overview
George, son of Michael of Antioch, a Christian who emigrated from the East. He learned the language, excelled in arithmetic, and was refined in Syria, in Antioch and elsewhere. Tamim ibn al-Mu'izz took him as a close companion, and Yahya would consult him. When Tamim died, he schemed until he joined Roger, lord of Sicily, who favoured him and placed him over his fleet. Roger sent him to besiege Mahdiyya, and he advanced with three hundred ships carrying a thousand horsemen. 1
