Overview
Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople at the time of the revolt in the Morea. Al-Salabi reports that he was a member of the society for the Great Greek Restoration (the Great Idea). When Russia denounced the rebellion of the Orthodox, he was obliged to issue a decree of excommunication against the rebels. 1
Ottoman intelligence raided the Patriarchate, and documents came into the government's hands: letters from priests who led the revolt in the Morea, correspondence with the embassies of England and France, news of weapons from the secret society's centre in Odessa, and receipts for financial aid. The Patriarch did not deny anything, but said that he had done everything himself. 1
Sultan Mahmud II issued a firman for his removal and then his execution. The sentence was carried out on the Orthodox Easter feast in about 1821 CE, and Anthimos was elected in his place. 1
