Overview
Isaac, a Jewish man who accompanied the embassy of Charlemagne to Harun al-Rashid in 181 AH / 797 CE, as an interpreter with two Franks. 2
The journey
The journey took three years. The two Franks died along the way, so Isaac returned alone, with an elephant that al-Rashid had given as a gift to Charlemagne. He reached Aachen in 183 AH / 799 CE, at the time when al-Rashid's embassy arrived. 2
According to Taqqush, these details are reported only in Latin sources, such as Einhard, St. Gall and the Royal Annals. He takes part in the embassies of al-Rashid and Charlemagne in the role of "interpreter of the first embassy". 2
