Overview

Jamil ibn Ka'b al-Tha'labi, a leader of Rabi'a and of the Shi'a of Ali. Mu'awiya took him captive. When he ordered his neck struck, Jamil made a supplication that al-Mas'udi relays, in which he said that Mu'awiya had not killed him in the way of God, but for the trash of this world. 1

Al-Mas'udi then relates that Mu'awiya answered his words as abuse that was eloquent, and a supplication that exaggerated; then he released him, and quoted verses of al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir on the pardon of kings. 1
