Overview
Al-Ustadh Kafur, a freedman of al-Ikhshid Muhammad ibn Tughj, who became ruler of Egypt after him. 1
His rise
Al-Ikhshid bought him, and he advanced in his service until he became the greatest of his commanders for his judgement, his counsel and his courage. Then he became the guardian (atabeg) of al-Ikhshid's son after him. The son was young, so the name of rule remained with Abu al-Qasim Unujur and the real management with Kafur, who ran affairs well until Unujur died. 2
After his death
Al-Suyuti says that when Kafur died, order broke down and the money available for the soldiers dwindled. A group wrote to al-Mu'izz al-Ubaydi asking him to send an army to take Egypt over. 1
