Arabic's greatest panegyrist; at Kafur's court in Egypt he met the Ikhshidid commander Fatik by chance in the desert — Fatik sent him a thousand-dinar gift, and al-Mutanabbi praised him in the ode 'no stratagem avails you...'; when Fatik died in 355 he mourned him with the towering elegy 'sorrow perturbs, patience dissuades' and left Egypt with it 1.

موجز
المتنبي هو أبو الطيب أحمد بن الحسين المتنبي، وصفه ابن العماد بأنه أعظم شعراء العربية. 1
في مصر
حلّ بمصر ضيفاً على كافور الإخشيدي. وكان فاتك الرومي الإخشيدي معروفاً بالكرم، غير أنه لا يقدر على قصد خدمة المتنبي خوفاً من كافور. فالتقيا مصادفة في الصحراء بلا موعد، وحمل له فاتك هدية قيمتها ألف دينار ثم أتبعها بهدايا أخرى. 1
استأذن المتنبي كافوراً في مدح فاتك فأذن له، فمدحه بقصيدة تبدأ بقوله «لا خيل عندك تهديها ولا مال». 1
رثاء فاتك
توفي فاتك بمصر في شوال سنة 355هـ، فرثاه المتنبي بقصيدة تبدأ بقوله «الحزن يقلق والتجمل يردع». ويصفها ابن العماد بأنها من المراثي الفائقة، ويذكر أنه خرج من مصر بها. 1
