Mujja'a ibn Murara al-Yamami

مجاعة بن مرارة اليمامي

A Hanafi of al-Yamama; he came to the Prophet ﷺ who made him a grant and wrote him a letter allotting al-Ghawra, Ghuraba and al-Habal, then Abu Bakr granted him al-Khidrima and Uthman a further allotment; on the day of the battle of al-Yamama he told Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) that most of its people had not come out to fight, and made peace on their behalf for half the captives and half the gold, silver, armour and mounts, then armed the remaining old men, boys and women and stood them on the fortresses so that Khalid saw fighters, returning to claim they had refused until he brought the terms down to a quarter of the captives and half the wealth — whereupon Khalid, entering and seeing who remained, said 'you deceived me, Mujja'a'; al-Harith ibn Murra al-Hanafi transmitted the report from Hisham ibn Isma'il.

Overview

Mujja'a ibn Murara al-Yamami of the Banu Hanifa. Al-Baladhuri says that the Prophet granted him land and wrote him a letter of grant for al-Ghawra, Gharaba and al-Habl. Then Abu Bakr granted him al-Khadrama, and Uthman granted him another estate. He took part in the battle of Yamama. 1

The day of Yamama

Al-Baladhuri relates that he told Khalid ibn al-Walid that most of the people of Yamama had not come out to fight him, and he made peace on their behalf in exchange for half the captives and half the silver and gold, the armour and the horses. He then dressed the elders, children and women who remained in the fortresses in weapons, and set them on the walls, so that Khalid saw them as fighting men. 1

Then Mujja'a returned, and said they had refused the peace until they had satisfied him with a quarter of the captives and half the wealth. When Khalid entered Yamama and saw those who remained there, he said: "You deceived me, Mujja'." 1

Al-Harith ibn Murra al-Hanafi, from Hisham ibn Isma'il, is among those who related the report. 1

Musaylima's apostasy and claim to prophethood at al-Yamama

When the Banu Hanifa delegation returned to al-Yamama, Musaylima apostatised and claimed prophethood, saying he had been made a partner in the matter with Muhammad and citing the Prophet's words that he was 'not the worst placed of you'. He produced rhymed sayings imitating the Qur'an, permitted wine and fornication and lifted the prayer, while still testifying that Muhammad was a prophet, and Hanifa rallied to him. Ibn Ishaq has it from a shaykh of Banu Hanifa and adds: God knows best which account is true.
