Nizam al-Din al-Baqish

نظام الدين البقش

601 AH

Al-Baqish, Ilghazi's mamluk and the virtuous regent of Mardin — pious, just, he raised the child Yuluq Arslan and married his mother, yet never let the grown prince rule; his own mamluk Lu'lu' drove him, and when he set Yuluq's infant brother Taj al-Din as a name-only king, the young Qutb al-Din ended the regency in 601 with a dagger — both heads thrown to the troops 1.

Overview

Nizam al-Din al-Baqish, a mamluk of Qutb al-Din Ilghazi, lord of Mardin 2.

Raising the prince

Shah Armen, lord of Khilat, appointed him to raise the son of his own freedman, Husam al-Din Bulq Arslan, and to manage his realm. Ibn al-Athir describes him as devout, good, just, and of good conduct. He raised the boy well and married the boy's mother 2.

Rule and death

When the boy grew up, Nizam did not let him take control of his realm. His mamluk Lu'lu', who had come to dominate the state, pushed him to act as he did. When the boy died, Nizam made his younger brother ruler in name only, while rule remained with Nizam and Lu'lu' until 601 AH 2.

When Nizam fell ill, Qutb al-Din came to visit him. He struck Lu'lu' with a knife and killed him, then killed Nizam, and threw the two heads to the soldiers, who submitted to him 2.
