Overview

Samh ibn Malik al-Khawlani, governor of al-Andalus. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz appointed him in place of al-Hurr ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Thaqafi. The book states that this was between the years 100 AH and 102 AH 1.

His governorship

The book states that Umar entrusted him with emptying al-Andalus of the Muslim troops for fear of the enemy. Samh did not accept this, and wrote to the caliph that the people had multiplied there. Umar ordered him to desist from it 2.

It is also said that he came to al-Andalus in the year 100 AH, measured its land, and took the fifth of what had been conquered by force 3.

His campaign into Gaul

He began his campaign from Barcelona, and reached Narbonne and Septimania, and then besieged Toulouse. Odo, duke of Aquitaine, came to rescue it, and a battle took place in which Samh was killed, in the year 101 AH. After him, Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi took command of the army and withdrew with it 4.
