Overview

Leader of the Hanbalis of Baghdad in the time of al-Qa'im and al-Muqtadi. Ibn al-Jawzi reports that he stood against Abu Nasr ibn al-Qushayri the Ash'ari, until the strife of Shawwal 469 AH 1.

Reconciliation

When the vizier Fakhr al-Dawla summoned him to reconcile the two sides, Ibn al-Jawzi transmits his words: that their opponents claimed they were unbelievers, and that they held that whoever did not share their belief was likewise. He asked: "What reconciliation is there between us?" He argued from the belief of the two caliphs, al-Qa'im and al-Qadir 1.

His illness

It is said that he fell ill after that, and his legs swelled. It is also said that some of the jurists placed poison in his shoe. Ibn al-Jawzi transmits this in the form of report, and it is not confirmed in another source 1.
