Overview
The River of Ubulla is the great canal of Basra, running from al-Ijana to Ubulla, and its length is four farsakhs. Digging it was begun by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari on the orders of Umar, and it was completed by Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan from the point where it had become silted up. Al-Baladhuri mentions that this was the cause of his enmity with Abd Allah ibn Amir. 1
