Short answer
The khutba is a sermon given before the Friday prayer and in the two festivals. It contains praise of God, admonition and supplication for the Muslims.
Detailed answer
The sermon is a condition for the validity of the Friday prayer according to most jurists, and the text of Surat al-Jumu'a relates to it 1. The entry on the sermon sets out its place and form, and it is linked to the adhan and to prayer.
