The Almohad war-schools

المدارس الحربية الموحدية

Abd al-Mu'min's war-schools for cadre and soldier: he gathered the youth of the Maghrebi tribes, Masmuda above all; beside martial arts they taught Ibn Tumart's books and the pupils learnt his counsels by heart — weapons drill, riding, swimming, siegecraft by land and sea; near Marrakesh the Almohads dug a basin holding skiffs and small 'training ships' where the cadets practised rowing and command of vessels. The schooling ran at state expense with horses and arms granted, and out of it graduated many of the commanders, senior officers and castle-governors.

Overview

The Almohad military schools were schools founded by Abd al-Mu'min ibn Ali in the Almohad state to train commanders and soldiers. 1

Young men from the Maghribi tribes were gathered in them, especially the Masmuda. Alongside the military arts, the writings of the Mahdi Ibn Tumart were taught, and the students memorised his precepts. 1

Curricula

Training covered weapons, horsemanship, swimming, and methods of siege on land and at sea. A pool was built near Marrakesh in which boats and small training ships were placed, so that students could learn to row and to command ships. 1

Education was at the expense of the state, and the students were given horses and weapons. Many commanders, senior officers, and governors of fortresses graduated from them. 1

أبو يعقوب يوسف بن عبد المؤمن

Abu Ya'qub Yusuf ibn Abd al-Mu'min, second Almohad caliph — deposed the designated heir, his brother Muhammad, in Sha'ban 558, posted his brother Abu Hafs 'Umar over al-Andalus, and grew up between the cavalry and the scholars: a firm jurist whose bent ran to wisdom and philosophy, his dinars the 'Yusufis' of the Maghreb. He crossed in 566 with a hundred thousand horse, and at Seville the death of Ibn Mardanish (Rajab 567 — his mother was said to have poisoned him) brought the sons to surrender all the east of al-Andalus; Yusuf raided to the gates of Toledo, took Gafsa in 575, and died of illness (some said a Frankish arrow) at the month-long siege of Santarém in Rabi' I 580, carried home in a coffin while the Almohad commanders settled the succession on his son Ya'qub without a written will.
