The substance of the call in the opening of al-Muddaththir

مواد الدعوة في أوائل المدثر

What al-Raheeq al-Makhtum draws from the commands opening surat al-Muddaththir: warning implies a day of recompense and another life, and the remaining verses demand plain monotheism and entrusting all things to God; so the substance of the call is monotheism, belief in the Last Day, purification of the soul, entrusting affairs to God, all under belief in Muhammad's message.

Overview

In the opening commands of Surat al-Muddaththir, al-Rahiq al-Makhtum reads the materials of the call and proclamation, and summarises them in five: monotheism, faith in the Last Day, the purification of the soul, and the committing of all matters to God, all of this after faith in the mission of Muhammad and under his leadership. 1

How he derived them

The author holds that the warning itself implies that there are deeds with evil consequences that their doers will meet, and that in this world not everything people do is repaid. The warning therefore requires a day of recompense other than the days of this world, which is the Day of Resurrection, and this entails another life. 1 He holds that the other verses demand from the servants clear monotheism, the committing of all matters to God, and leaving the pleasure of the self and of people for the pleasure of God. 1

The five commands and their aims

The author counts the commands in the verses as: rising to warn, magnifying the Lord, purifying garments and abandoning uncleanness, not seeking abundance by favour, and patience for the Lord (al-Muddaththir 2 to al-Muddaththir 7). He holds that they are simple in appearance and powerful in effect. 2 Their aims, in his view, are that no dissenter be left unwarned, that no pride remain in the land without being broken, that the purification of outward and inward reach its goal, that a person not regard his efforts as great, and that he be patient with the harm of the obstinate for God's pleasure alone. 2 The details of the event are in the revelation of al-Muddaththir.

For young visitors

The first thing the Prophet ﷺ was asked to do was to stand up and deliver the message to people: that God is one, that there is a day when people will be judged, and that a person must purify himself and leave his affairs to God.
