Friendship with God (wilaya)
ولاية الله
Friendship with God in the thirty-eighth sacred hadith of the Forty: 'whoever is hostile to a friend of Mine, I have declared war on him; My servant draws near to Me by nothing dearer to Me than what I have made obligatory on him; and My servant keeps drawing near to Me through supererogatory works until I love him' — the wali, on the commentary's account, is the one upright upon the obligations who then ascends through supererogatory works until he becomes beloved of God, his hearing, sight, hand and foot then acting by Him; the drawing near that founds wilaya has two ranks — the obligations first, dearest of all approaches, then the supererogatory after them — while enmity to a friend occasions God's own declaration of war, the gravest of threats in defence of His beloveds (Jami' al-Ulum wal-Hikam pp. 770–771).

Overview
Wilaya (sainthood, friendship with God) is set out in Ibn Rajab's commentary on the thirty-eighth hadith of the Forty, a sacred hadith about God's friend and drawing near to Him. 1
Who is the friend
The commentary says that the friend is one who has stood firm in the obligations, then advanced by supererogatory acts until he became beloved to God. The hadith says that his hearing, his sight, his hand, and his foot are by God. 1
The two degrees of drawing near
There are two degrees of drawing near on which friendship rests. The obligations come first, and they are the most beloved of the approaches to God. Then the supererogatory acts follow. 1
Enmity toward the friend
The hadith says that whoever is hostile to a friend, God declares war on him. The commentary considers this the greatest threat concerning those who love Him. 1
