Overview
In 113 AH the governor of Khurasan, al-Junayd ibn Abd al-Rahman, set out on a raid toward Tukharistan, then turned toward Samarkand when the Turks marched on it, and entered the "Defile" four parasangs from the city. 1
What happened
al-Tabari relates that al-Junayd halted by the river of Balkh and sent two commanders in two directions with two divided armies. When the Turks surged toward Samarkand, and its governor wrote to him, he ordered the people to cross. Some of his companions warned him against dividing the army and against meeting the Turks, but he went on and took the road through the pass. 1
When he entered the Defile, the Khaqan poured upon him with a great host and attacked the vanguard. The people held firm and fought until they were exhausted. 1
