Overview

In 96 AH al-Tabari mentions the killing of Qutayba ibn Muslim in Khurasan. He says its cause was al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik's effort to make his son Abd al-Aziz heir apparent, and to that end he sent secret messages to the commanders and the poets. 1

He had earlier mentioned Qutayba's conquest of Kashgar and his raid on China. 2

al-Sallabi's account

al-Sallabi says that Qutayba renounced obedience to Sulayman after the death of al-Walid, and the appointment of governorship from Sulayman reached him after he had broken away. He says that Waki' ibn Hassan and those with him killed him in Dhu al-Hijja 96 AH. He comments that he died a death of ignorance in the renunciation, and that he had good works for which pardon may be hoped. 3
