The delegation's account

The Hamdan delegation came in 9 AH after the Prophet's return from Tabuk; the Prophet wrote them a document granting what they asked and set Malik ibn al-Namt over those of his people who had become Muslim 2. To the rest he sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to call them to Islam; he stayed six months calling them and they did not answer 3. Then he sent Ali ibn Abi Talib, ordering him to relieve Khalid; Ali came to Hamdan, read the Prophet's letter to them and called them to Islam — and they all became Muslim 1. Ali wrote to the Prophet with the good news of their conversion; when the Prophet read the letter he fell prostrate, then raised his head and said: peace be upon Hamdan, peace be upon Hamdan 4.

The delegation of Najran

Sixty riders of Christian Najran came to Medina in 9 AH led by the Aqib, the Sayyid and Bishop Abu Haritha; when they declined Islam the Prophet offered the mutual invocation of God's curse (mubahala) with Fatima, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, they asked instead for terms, and a treaty granted them God's protection in exchange for two thousand garments a year.
