Medina

The end of Jewish supremacy at Yathrib: the tyrant al-Fityawn of Banu La'laba claimed every Jewish bride before her husband until Malik ibn al-Ajlan the Khazraji killed him in his chamber at his own sister's wedding; Malik fled to Abu Jubayla — a Khazraji grandee at the Ghassanid court — who swore off perfume and women until the Jews were humbled, marched to Yathrib feigning a Yemen campaign, summoned the Jewish notables and slaughtered them at his door, leaving Aws and Khazraj masters of palm and dwelling 1.

Overview

Ibn al-Athir relates an account of Yathrib before Islam: how the Jewish domination of Medina ended after the killing of al-Fituyun, and the Aws and Khazraj became its most powerful people. 1

The killing of al-Fituyun

Ibn al-Athir says that the Jews were dominant in the city when the Aws and Khazraj came to live in it, until a Jewish man of the Banu La'laba, al-Fituyun, became its king. He describes him as an evil, wicked man, and says that the Jews made it binding on their people that no woman be married without going in to him before her husband. When the sister of Malik ibn al-Ajlan of the Khazraj was brought in marriage, she cried out at him, and Malik entered upon al-Fituyun in his private chamber and killed him. 1

The revenge

Malik fled to Syria, and went to Abu Jubayla Ubayd ibn Salim of the Khazraj at the court of the king of Ghassan. Abu Jubayla swore to God that he would not touch perfume or approach women until he had humiliated the Jews. He set out with a great host and showed that he meant to go to Yemen. Then he summoned the notables of the Jews, had them brought in one by one, and killed them. The Aws and Khazraj thus became the most powerful people of Medina, sharing with the Jews the palms and the houses. 1

The account is from Ibn al-Athir alone, and no date is given for it. An additional source is needed.
