Overview

Al-Khazraj is one of the two tribes of Yathrib, with al-Aws. The Sealed Nectar counts them among the branches of Kahlan of the Qahtani lineage, and makes them sons of Haritha ibn Thalaba ibn Amr of al-Azd, who settled in Medina after the migration of the Azd from Yemen. 2 3 4

A dispute over lineage

The author notes that Sulayman al-Nadwi inclined to the view that the Ansar of the Aws and al-Khazraj were of the family of Nabit ibn Ismail, not of Qahtan. 5 6

Wars between kin

The author gives the Aws and al-Khazraj as an example of how rivalry for honour often led to wars between tribes that share one father. 7

Not covered here

The pledges of al-Aqaba and the support of al-Khazraj for the Prophet ﷺ after the migration are presented under the Ansar and in the entries on the events.

For young visitors

Al-Khazraj are a tribe of Medina, originally from Yemen. Together with al-Aws they became the "Ansar", the helpers who welcomed the Prophet.

Medina

City in the Hejaz to which the Prophet migrated in 622 CE; site of the Prophet's Mosque and the first Muslim community. The Prophet declared it a sanctuary as Abraham declared Mecca — its bounds 'between 'Ayr and Thawr' (or 'to Uhud' in the reading Abu 'Ubayd and al-Hazimi preferred) and 'between its two lava fields'; within them hunting and tree-cutting are forbidden and the bloodwit for unintended killing is heavier. Samhudi counts nearly ninety-five names for it, among them Tayba, Taba and Yathrib.
