The Marquis of Cadiz seized Alhama by stealth in the last days of the truce (887) — the blow that opened Granada's final war; Granada's folk besieged the garrison and nearly cut its water until relief armies forced them off, and a last escalade by men of Baza and Guadix was discovered and hurled from the heights 1.

Overview

Al-Maqqari reports that the Christians took Alhama by treachery at the end of a truce in 887 AH, through the lord of Cadiz. The people of Granada laid siege to it and did not win it back. 1

The taking

He says that they fortified themselves in the castle and then took the town. They filled the roads with horse and foot, and put the sword to whichever Muslims appeared, while the people were heedless and asleep. 2

The siege

The people of Granada went out with the Christians, ten thousand between foot and horse, and tightened the siege, hoping to cut off the water. Then came word that a great host was coming to relieve those in Alhama, and the troops broke off. The Christian reinforcements entered and fortified it. The Muslims returned to besieging it, and a group entered from a side they had neglected, but the Christians noticed them and killed most of them, and they were from Baza and the valley of Guadix. So the people gave up hope of retaking it. 3
