تسليم غرناطة ودخول النصارى الحمراء
c. 2 January 1492 CE · 897 AH
On 2 Rabi I 897 the Christians took the Alhambra: Granada's sultan Abu Abdallah surrendered on sixty-seven conditions — safety of life, family and property, the shari'a kept, mosques and waqfs untouched, free passage to North Africa — then withdrew to the Alpujarras and crossed to Fez; the Christians broke the treaty clause by clause until forced conversion followed in 904 1.

Overview
On the second of Rabi al-Awwal 897 AH the Castilians entered the Alhambra, after the last of the Nasrid sultans, Abu Abd Allah, handed over Granada under documents of sixty-seven conditions. 2
The conditions
The sultan met with the people of the state and the counsellors, and their opinion agreed to take the lesser of two harms. The conditions were read out to the people of Granada, and they submitted to them. 2
The account gives some of them: the safety of the people in their persons, families and property, their remaining in their places, the upholding of their law, and the survival of the mosques and endowments. Among them was that no Christian should enter a Muslim's house or a mosque, that the captives be ransomed, and that whoever wished might cross to the Moroccan shore. 2
After the surrender
The Castilians took about five hundred notables as pledges. The sultan went down to the Alpujarras, then crossed the sea to Melilla and settled in Fez. 2
Al-Maqqari reports that the Christians broke the conditions one after another, until they forced the Muslims to convert to Christianity in 904 AH. The people of the Bayyazin rose against the rulers and killed them, villages that refused were wiped out, and the people of the mountain of Balanqa came out under safe conduct to Fez. 2
The date of the event is converted from the Hijri date. 3
