قتل أمير الحاج أقباش ووقعة الحسن بن قتادة بمكة

In 618 AH Aqbash, the amir of the Iraqi pilgrimage, was killed near Mecca in a confrontation with al-Hasan ibn Qatada. Then al-Hasan granted the pilgrims safe conduct, and they completed their pilgrimage. ¹

Ibn al-Athir relates that Aqbash, a mamluk of the caliph al-Nasir, behaved well toward the pilgrims. Rajih ibn Qatada offered him money to help him take the rule of Mecca from his brother al-Hasan. The caravan camped at al-Zahir, and al-Hasan came out with a host of Arabs. ¹

Aqbash advanced alone and climbed the mountain. Al-Hasan's men surrounded him, killed him and hung up his head, and the caliph's army was routed. ¹

The soldiers surrounded the pilgrims to plunder them, and al-Hasan sent his turban as a safe conduct for them, and nothing of theirs was taken. They stayed ten days performing the pilgrimage and then returned safely to Iraq. Al-Hasan then sent envoys to apologise and ask for pardon, and they were granted it. ¹

The book also says that Qatada ibn Idris, the father of al-Hasan, died in that year. ²
