Summary
In the first month of the tenth year of the mission, the document that Quraysh had hung in the Ka'ba was annulled, and Banu Hashim came out of the Shi'b. The effort to annul it was led by Hisham ibn Amr and then Zuhayr ibn Abi Umayya; al-Mut'im ibn Adi, Abu al-Bakhtari and Zam'a ibn al-Aswad joined them. 1 2.
Seeking the annulment
Hisham ibn Amr used to bring food secretly by night to Banu Hashim in the Shi'b. He went to Zuhayr and said: "Are you content to eat and drink while your maternal kin are in this state, known to you?" Zuhayr replied: "By God, if I had another man with me, I would rise to annul it." Hisham said: "I have found a man." They went to al-Mut'im, Abu al-Bakhtari and Zam'a, and they gathered at al-Hajun. 1 2.
The day of the annulment
Zuhayr circled the House seven times, then stood up among the people and said: "Shall we eat food and wear clothes while Banu Hashim are left to perish, neither sold to nor bought from? By God, I will not sit down until this cutting, unjust document is torn." 2. Abu Jahl said: "You lie." Zam'a, Abu al-Bakhtari, al-Mut'im and Hisham answered by disowning the document, and Abu Jahl said: "This is a matter that was settled at night." 2.
The termites
The Prophet had been informed of the matter of the document. God sent termites against it, and they ate everything in it of severance and injustice, while the name of God remained on it. He told his uncle Abu Talib about this, and Abu Talib went out to Quraysh and said: "If my nephew is lying, we will leave you to deal with him; if he is truthful, you will give up your severance of us." 3. When al-Mut'im went to tear it, he found that the termites had eaten it, except for the name of God. 3 4. The Prophet and the Muslims came out of the Shi'b, and the polytheists saw a great sign of prophethood, but they turned away and their disbelief increased. 3
Notes for researchers
- The book notes disagreement over who wrote the document: Mansur ibn Ikrima according to some, al-Nadr ibn al-Harith according to others; the view it considers sound is Bughayd ibn Amir. 5 6
- The book leans toward Abu Talib having died six months after the annulment, which would place the annulment in Muharram of the tenth year. In its own reckoning, this is an arithmetical ordering. 1.
For young visitors
After three years in the Shi'b, a group of Quraysh men gathered to tear up the paper they had written unjustly, but they found that the termites had eaten it. The Prophet's household then came out of the Shi'b free.
