وثبة قتادة على ركب العراق بمنى سنة 608هـ

c. 1211 CE · 608 AH

In 608 Qatada the Husayni, amir of Mecca, fell upon the Iraqi pilgrimage caravan at Mina — 'and not a spear was dipped in it' 1. Ibn al-Athir gives the mechanism: a Batini killed one of Qatada's men at Mina mistaking him for the amir, whereupon Qatada mustered the ashraf, Arabs, slaves and Meccans, descended on the pilgrims from the mountain with stones and arrows — the boy pilgrim-amir panicking — and plundered the margins of the camp. The survivors joined the Syrian convoy and completed their hajj; Qatada sent his son to Baghdad with drawn swords and shrouds to kiss the threshold in apology 2.

Overview

In the pilgrimage season of 608 AH Qatada al-Husayni, amir of Mecca, attacked the Iraqi caravan at Mina; the people fled and a group were killed. Ibn Imad says the people's losses were estimated at a hundred thousand dinars, and Ibn al-Athir gives the cause of the incident. 1 2

Ibn Imad's account

Ibn Imad says in "Shadharat al-Dhahab" that Qatada pounced on the Iraqi caravan at Mina, the people fled and a group were killed. He says it is said that the people lost goods worth a hundred thousand dinars. 1

Ibn al-Athir's account

Ibn al-Athir relates that a member of the Batiniyya pounced on one of Qatada's men at Mina and killed him, thinking he was Qatada. Qatada gathered the notables, the Arabs, the slaves and the people of Mecca, and they descended on the pilgrims from the mountain, pelting them with stones and arrows. The pilgrims' commander was a boy, the son of the amir Yaqut, and he was afraid and confused. 2

The amir of Mecca plundered those at the edges of the camp. Then the pilgrims set out, and those who escaped joined the pilgrims of Syria; they were prevented from entering Mecca, then permitted to enter and completed their pilgrimage. 2

The apology

Ibn al-Athir says that Qatada sent his son and a group of his companions to Baghdad, and they entered it with swords drawn and shrouds with them. They kissed the threshold and apologised for what had been done to the pilgrims. 2
