Summary

The people awoke with no water and complained of it to the Prophet; he prayed, God sent a cloud and it rained until the people drank their fill and drew what water they needed. In Mahmud ibn Labid's version, a man known for hypocrisy said on seeing it: a passing cloud. 1

The account

When the people awoke with no water they complained of it to the Prophet; he prayed, and God sent a cloud that rained until the people drank their fill and carried off the water they needed. 2

Ibn Ishaq relates from Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatada, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from men of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, that the people used to know the hypocrisy among them — a man knowing it in his brother, father, uncle and clan — yet some shielded others from it. 3

Mahmud reports a man of the hypocrites, well known as such, saying when the cloud rained — in reply to one who asked him "is anything beyond this?" — : a passing cloud. 3

Markers of weakness and doubt

  • The judgement of hypocrisy on the man is the narrator's words (Mahmud ibn Labid from men of Banu Abd al-Ashhal); the text does not name the man (p. 166).

The army camps at al-Hijr and the Prophet bans its water

On the road to Tabuk the Prophet stopped at al-Hijr, and the people drew water from its well. After they had rested he forbade them to drink its water, perform ablutions from it or eat dough kneaded with it, and ordered that no one go out at night without a companion; two men of Banu Sa'ida disobeyed — one was strangled and the wind carried the other to the mountains of Tayy.
