Overview

In 251 AH Baghra al-Saghir and Wasif were killed at the hand of Bagir the Turk, and the affairs of the clients at Samarra fell into disorder. Al-Musta'in went to Baghdad to Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Tahir. 1

Fortifying the city

Ibn Tahir cut off supplies to the people of Samarra. Al-Musta'in ordered him to fortify Baghdad, so he built the wall and dug trenches around the two walls on both sides. The expenditure reached three hundred thousand dinars and thirty thousand. 1

Siege engines of several kinds were set up at the gates of the city, among them a great catapult called al-Ghadban. 1

The fighting

When the Turks and the Maghariba came to the gates of the eastern side, they were shut in their faces and shot at with arrows and catapults. Many were killed on both sides and many wounded. 2

The end

The war between the people of Baghdad and the Samarra army lasted until al-Musta'in deposed himself, and al-Mu'tazz was given allegiance on Friday, the fourth of Muharram 252 AH. Al-Musta'in was taken to the palace of al-Hasan ibn Sahl at al-Makhram, and his staff and ring were taken from him. 3

The Nizamiyya Madrasa of Baghdad

The Nizamiyya of Baghdad, first and most famous of the madrasas founded by the vizier Nizam al-Mulk al-Tusi: building began in 457 and sisters rose at Nishapur, Isfahan, Herat, Basra, Mosul and Amid; the Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni then Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi taught in it, and it mothered the Sunni institutional model that the later madrasas of Baghdad followed — the caliphs prayed there and Nizam al-Mulk himself visited to inspect its library.
