al-Silan

Stung when Banū ʿĀmir seized part of Khusraw's trading convoy, al-Nuʿmān sent his host disguised as merchants: strike Banū ʿĀmir at al-Silān when the fair ends and the sacred months lapse. ʿAbdallāh ibn Judʿān carried the warning and Abū Barāʾ ʿĀmir ibn Mālik «player of lances» returned to lead them. Yazīd ibn al-Ṣaʿq captured the king's half-brother Wabra; the host nearly broke until Dirār ibn ʿAmr and his nine sons held the line — old Dirār, saved by his sons, gave the proverb «whoever delights in his sons is grieved by himself». Abū Barāʾ was tricked into taking Ḥubaysh ibn Dalaf «a man worth a ransom»; Ḥubaysh bought freedom with four hundred camels, Wabra with a thousand — making poor Yazīd rich — and al-Nuʿmān's army was routed 1.

Summary

The Day of al-Silan: al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir laid a plot against the Banu Amir after they intercepted the perfume caravan of Khosrow. He fitted out a caravan with his soldiers and ordered them to attack the Banu Amir once the sacred months had passed. Abd Allah ibn Jud'an warned the Banu Amir, and they took precautions. Abu Bara Amir ibn Malik, known as Mula'ib al-Asinna, came back to support them. When the two sides met, Yazid ibn al-Sa'q and Burra ibn Rumanas, a maternal brother of al-Nu'man, were captured. The army was about to be routed, had it not been for Dirar ibn Amr al-Dabbi and his nine sons. When Dirar fell, they rescued him, and a saying became proverbial that a man whose sons gladden him may find his own self grieved. Abu Bara took Habish ibn Dalf, who had been deceived into thinking he was a slave, and Habish ransomed himself for four hundred camels. Burra was ransomed for a thousand camels and a horse, and Yazid grew rich. The army of al-Nu'man was routed. 1

The Battle of Dhu Qar

Khosrow’s marzabans and the governor Iyas ibn Qabisa marched to wrest al-Nuʾman’s deposited family and wealth from Hani ibn Masʾud; Banu Shayban met them at Dhu Qar and routed the Persians utterly — the first day the Arabs defeated the Persians, shortly after the Prophet’s birth.
