Overview
Hani' ibn Mas'ud al-Shaybani: chief of the house of Shayban, keeper of al-Nu'man's deposit, and leader of the victory over the Persians on the day of Dhi Qar.
Life
Al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir alighted on him in secret and deposited with him his family and wealth before going to Kisra 1.
When Kisra appointed Iyas ibn Qubaysa over al-Hira and ordered him to take what was with Hani', Hani' refused out of jealous honour and declared war on the king — hence the day of Dhi Qar, in which the sons of Shayban triumphed and the Persians suffered a grievous rout 1.
Al-Mubarakpuri tells his story in the chapter on Jahiliyya morals: keeping a covenant was for them a religion, for whose sake they risked their sons' deaths and their homes' ruin; it suffices to know this from the stories of Hani' ibn Mas'ud al-Shaybani, al-Samaw'al ibn Adiya' and Hajib ibn Zurara 1.
For young visitors
Hani' was a man who kept his absent friend's trust and refused to hand it over to the greatest king — and fought for it and prevailed.
