Banu Yafran (Yafranids)

بنو يفرن

Banu Yafran of the Zanata, among the greatest Berber tribes of the Maghreb; many branches scattered through the homeland — Warkuwa and Maranjisa in Ifriqiya, the Tlemcen–Tahert stock that produced Abu Yazid 'Man of the Donkey' and Abu Qurra who besieged Umar ibn Hafs at Tubna — and two states: the first in the Middle Maghreb under Ya'la ibn Muhammad, founder of Ifkan, whose khutba ran for al-Nasir from Tahert to Tangier until Jawhar killed him in 347, and the second at Salé in the Far Maghreb.

Overview

Banu Yafran are of the Zanata, and Ibn Khaldun describes them as among the greatest Berber tribes of the Maghrib. They have many branches scattered across their homelands. 1

Branches

Among them in Ifriqiya are Banu Warkaw and Marnajisa. Among them in the regions of Tlemcen and Tahart came Abu Yazid, the man of the donkey, and Abu Qurra, who besieged Umar ibn Hafs at Tabna. 1

The two states

They founded two states. The first was in the central Maghrib under Ya'la ibn Muhammad, who was the planner of Ifkan, and who preached in the name of al-Nasir from Tahart to Tangier, until Jawhar the secretary killed him in the year 347 AH. The second was at Sala in the far Maghrib after him. 1

Abu Qurra al-Yafrani

Abu Qurra al-Yafrani al-Zanati, one of the Yafranid chiefs holding the Tlemcen marches at the dawn of the Abbasid state; king of his people there, he besieged the Umayyad governor Umar ibn Hafs at Tubna until he forced him back to Ifriqiya — among the earliest great men of Zanata in the Middle Maghreb before the da'wa settled on the later Yafranids Muhammad ibn Salih and his son Ya'la.
