Overview

From his camp at Tabuk, the Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to Dumat al-Jandal to take Ukaydir ibn Abd al-Malik, its lord. Khalid then returned with the captive to the Prophet, who made peace with him 1.

The route

The Prophet sent Khalid with four hundred and twenty horsemen, and told him that he would find Ukaydir hunting cattle 1. The text does not describe the road going out, or how long it took.

In Dumat al-Jandal the cattle came out on a moonlit night, rubbing their horns against the palace gate. Ukaydir came out to hunt them, and Khalid's horsemen met him and took him 1.

After the capture

Ukaydir's life was spared and he was brought to the Prophet. The Prophet made peace with him for two thousand camels, eight hundred head of livestock, four hundred coats of mail and four hundred spears, and he agreed to give the jizya. The peace with Yuhanna ibn Ruba, lord of Aila, was on a settlement covering Dumat, Tabuk, Aila and Tayma' 1.

What the text does not say

The text does not mention the road from Tabuk to Dumat al-Jandal, nor the number of days of travel, nor an exact date for the night of the capture. The event falls within the Tabuk expedition, which is why this route attributes it to that expedition 1.

Khalid's mission to Ukaydir of Dumat al-Jandal

The Prophet summoned Khalid ibn al-Walid and sent him to Ukaydir ibn Abd al-Malik al-Kindi, the Christian king of Duma, telling him he would find him hunting wild cows. Khalid set out, and on a moonlit night Ukaydir came out when the cows rubbed their horns against his palace gate; the Prophet's cavalry met him, captured him and killed his brother Hassan. Khalid took his brocade gown laced with gold and sent it to the Prophet.
