Overview

The army's march from Medina to Banu Qurayza, after the Muslims returned from the Trench in Dhu al-Qa'da of the 5th year AH. Gabriel ordered the march; the Prophet ﷺ then camped at the well of Ana, one of the wells of Qurayza, and the army besieged their forts 1.

The route

On the day the Prophet returned from the Confederates, Gabriel came to him at noon and ordered him to march to Banu Qurayza 2. The Prophet called out to the people that no one should pray the afternoon prayer except at Banu Qurayza. He appointed Ibn Umm Maktum over Medina and handed the banner to Ali ibn Abi Talib 2. He camped at a well of Qurayza called the well of Ana 2.

The Muslims then moved toward Qurayza in successive groups until they caught up with the Prophet. They numbered three thousand, with thirty horses, and they surrounded the forts of Banu Qurayza and imposed a siege 2.

On the road

The afternoon prayer overtook the Muslims on the road, and they differed in how they understood the Prophet's order. Some prayed after the night prayer, and others prayed on the road. The Prophet did not rebuke either group 2.

Notes

The book does not name the stations between Medina and the well of Ana, and does not assign a numbered day to any station. The order of stations here is the order of the text itself.

The Battle of the Trench (al-Ahzab)

In Shawwal 5 AH (February-March 627 CE), a confederate army of 10,000 Meccans and Bedouin allies besieged Medina; upon Salman al-Farisi's advice the Muslims dug a protective trench on their northern boundary; the siege endured for nearly a month amidst cold, hunger, and the treachery of Banu Qurayza, until broken by Nu'aym ibn Mas'ud's stratagem and a violent night windstorm.
